From 矢 (shǐ) ‘arrow’ and 豆 (dòu) ‘bean’. 豆 meant ‘sacrificial vessel’ before it meant ‘bean’.

The Shuōwén Seal form of 短(􀹤) duǎn ‘short length/interval’ combines 矢(􀹜) shǐ ‘arrow’ (straight), and 豆(􀵠) dòu (phonosemantic).
