From 火 (huǒ) ‘fire’ and 柬 jiǎn phonetic; in the simple form 炼, 柬 is replaced by ; compare 拣(揀) jiǎn. Notice that the component (柬 jiǎn) is not the same as 东(東 dōng ‘east’).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 炼/煉(􁮆) liàn ‘smelt metal’ combines 火 (huǒ) ‘fire’, and 𫠣/柬(􁃨) jiǎn ‘select/choose’ (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 鍊(􂝄).
Etymologically, 炼 liàn is the same word as 练(練) liàn ‘practice’.
Note: 拣/揀 jiǎn ‘select/choose’, formerly wr. 柬(􁃨).
Compare: 练/練(􂑐) liàn ‘boil/purify raw silk; drill/train’.
