The bottom is 夕 (xī) ‘night’. The simple form 梦 has 林 lín ‘forest’ on top. Though one can 梦 dream about 林 forests, 梦 was perhaps an arbitrary abbreviation of the full form 夢, the top of which is from 苜 miè ‘squint, bad sight’, with 罒(目 mù) ‘eye’, and 冖 () ‘cover’, indicating that the eyes are covered. Etymologically related to 蒙 méng ‘cover’, and 瞢 méng ‘covered eyes, blindness’.

The simple-form character mèng ‘dream’ is an old abbrev. of the full-form character 夢, replacing the upper full-form component  (10 strokes) with 林 (8 strokes; as in 辳 ‘stars’); the full form 夢 is itself an old abbrev. of 㝱.
Compare 岁() suì.

The Shuōwén Seal form of 夢(􁊝) méng ‘dim/dark’ combines 夕(􁊛) xī ‘moon/evening/night’, and 瞢(􀧹𥊃) méng ‘dim/dark’ (abbrev. phonosemantic).
