<WL>栖(F棲) [qī] 栖息 qīxī (of birds) nest/roost/perch; dwell/stay; 两栖 amphibious@@; (HDZ:) … [xī] 栖栖 jumpy
From 木 (mù) ‘tree’ and 西 xī ‘west’.

The simple-form character 栖 qī ‘nest’ is an old variant of the full-form character 棲, formerly wr. simply 西 (which is the right-side component of the simple form 栖).
According to one theory, 西 was originally a picture of a nest. Otherwise 西 xī is simply phonetic in 栖.

The simple-form character 栖 qī ‘to nest/roost, rest the night’ (栖宿) combines 木 (mù) ‘tree’, and 西(􂂜㢴) qī/‘nest/west’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 棲(􂂝).
The full form 棲 is has 妻 qī (‘wife’) as the phonetic.

Compare: 西(􂂜㢴) qī/xī ‘nest/west’ (said to depict a bird on its nest); today mainly 西 xī ‘west’, but formerly 西 qī ‘nest’ (later wr. 棲, and 栖, which is today used as the simple form).

The full-form character 棲 is just one of several older variant forms of the character formerly read 西 qī ‘nest’; cf. 西 xī ‘west’.

The Shuōwén Seal form of 棲(􂂝) ‘nest’ combines 木 (mù) ‘tree’, and (􂉒􂉓𡜽) ‘consort/wife’ (phonosemantic): the female (wife) bird nests (broods on her eggs) in a nest, built in a tree; the main SW form is 西(􂂜㢴), formerly also wr. 卥(􂂞), 卤(􂂟), and later wr. 栖 (which is today used as the simple form).
