The simple form 术 depicts a kind of grain. (The original meaning is now written 秫 shú, with 禾 hé ‘grain’ added.)
The character 术 (5 strokes) is an old form of the character 秫 shú ‘sorghum’, later re-used as the simple form of the full-form character 術 (11 strokes) in which it is the central component; cf. 術.
The full form 術 contains phonetic and (xíng) ‘conduct’.
Note: Today mainly 术/術 shù ‘skill/art’; today wr. in simple-form texts, also wr. 朮 (Big5); the component of 术 seems to be 木 (mù) ‘tree/wood’ (or 𣎳 pìn), but the old forms were different (see below); the shape 木(􀻢) mù (草木 ‘plant’) in modern 术 is also seen in the old and modern forms of (􁋕) ‘grain/cereal’.
The use of 术 as the modern simple form resulted by omitting 行.
The Shuōwén Seal form of (􁋬朮􁋫秫) shú ‘sorghum’ is said to depict the sorghum grain plant, modifying 𣎳(􁍾𣎵) bèi ‘sprouting/thriving plants’ by bending over the top (heavy grain/seed head) and adding a dot to signify a grain; glutinous sorghum, skillfully planted/tended/harvested/cooked/brewed; the main SW form 秫(􁋫) adds the radical 禾 (hé) ‘grain/cereal’; cf. 秫.
