<WL>撑(F撐) [chēng] 支撑 prop/keep up, support; 撑船 pole/punt a boat; 支撑点 strong point; fill/full to bursting (撑肠拄肚)@@; (HDZ:) …
From 扌(手 shǒu) ‘hand’ and (zhǎng) (‘palm of the hand’) phonetic.

The simple-form character 撑 (15 strokes) is an old common form of the full-form character 撐 (15 strokes), replacing the full-form component 牚 (12 strokes) with 掌 (12 strokes).
The full form has 牙 (yá ‘tooth’) in place of 手, for obscure reasons (an older form was 牚; before that it had 止 ‘foot’ rather than 牙 ‘tooth’ or 手 ‘hand’).
+
The full-form character 撐 chēng ‘to prop up’ (by hand) combines 扌(手 shǒu) ‘hand’, and 牚 chèng ‘brace/prop’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 牚(􀑧𣥺䟫), cf. 橕/樘(􀿇), 枨/棖(􁀾).
 +
Compare: 𣥺/䟫/牚/撑/chēng (v.) ‘to prop up’ (by hand or mechanically), vs. 牚/橕/樘 chèng (n.)‘wooden/mechanical prop/pillar’; cf. 𫔘/閁.
 +
In the simple form 撑 the full-form component is replaced with 掌 zhǎng ‘palm of the hand; master/control’ (phonosemantic); cf. 掌: 忍, 支撑 (HDZ).
