From 扌(手 shǒu) ‘hand’ and 穵 yà ‘cave; hollow’, which is 穴 (xué) ‘hole’ over 乙 yǐ phonetic. 穵 was formerly also used for wā ‘dig’, yà and wā being cognates; the ‘hand’ radical was added for the verb.
The character 挖 wā ‘dig out (by hand)’ combines 扌(手 shǒu) ‘hand’, and 穵(􁐋) yà/wā ‘hole/dig’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 穵 (wā).
Note: In 挖 wā ‘dig’ (formerly wr. 穵) the component 扌(手) distinguishes 穵 wā (v.) ‘dig’, vs. 穵 yà (n.) ‘hole’.
Compare: 穵(􁐋) yà/wā ‘hole/dig’ ← MC /ʔet/ʔuet/; 捾(􂄮) wò ‘scoop/dig/gouge out’ ← MC /ʔuɑt/ (SBGY).
