<WL>戠 [zhī] (=􂃿職S职􀙐識S识) 标志, 记号 (職/識); 聚合 (结合, 团聚), 聚会 (聚集, 会合) (cf. 簪) [zhí] 埴: 细腻的黄粘土
From 音 (yīn) ‘sound’ and 戈 (gē) ‘weapon’. 戠 occurs only as a component in other characters, and then only among full form characters. Among simple form characters, 戠 is always replaced by 只 zhǐ. The meaning was ‘officer’:
The Shuōwén Seal form of 戠(􂍦) zhī ‘sign/symbol/mark; combine/integrate’ combines 音(􀜻) yīn ‘articulate/musical sound/tone’ (cf. 职/職), and 戈(􂍍) ‘lance-axe’: the sign 戠 integrates sound/musician and lance/soldier to symbolize ‘posts/duties/occupations’ in general; formerly also wr. 𧧬.
Note: In the modern form 戠 (12 strokes) the central horizontal strokes of 音 and 戈 are merged into a single stroke, i.e., the 戈 lance-axe cuts through the 䇂(􀝁) of 言(􀝁): acknowledge and obey commands, do one's duty, at all costs, or else be executed as a 䇂 qiān ‘criminal’.
Compare: 织/織(􂐅) zhī ‘weave’; 识/識(􀙐) zhì ‘banner/flag’; 职/職(􂃿) zhí ‘duty’.
Note: The received SW analysis of 戠 is incomplete (textual lacuna); the Tang/Song text notes that 戠 is an old wr. of 職 as in 職役 (职事) ‘posts/duties/occupations’ (XK); GY classifies it under 職/軄 zhí along with 織 zhī ‘weave’, and so HDZ gives the corresp. primary modern reading as 戠 zhī (not zhí); others assoc. it esp. with 識 (HDZ), or with 撍/簪, seeing 音 as perhaps even phonetic (cf. DYC), though that is difficult to reconcile with 戠 as SW phonetic in various characters (the old stop finals differ, /-m/ vs. /-k/).
Note: In modern usage 戠 occurs only as a component in other characters, and then only among full-form characters; in simple-form characters the component 戠 is always replaced by 只 (but cf. 樴, vs. 枳).
“The man with 戈 a lance who 音 commands” —Karlgren(1923).
“The man with 戈 a lance who 音 commands” —Karlgren(1923).
Then 耳 (ěr) ‘ear’ was added, producing the modern character 職, whose simple form is 职.
