(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character (7 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 識 (19 strokes), simplifying the left side /, and replacing the full-form component (12 strokes) with (5 strokes).
Note: In the simple form , the full-form component is replaced by zhǐ (phonetic); the simple form is not ⿰; for use of for , cf. .
The Shuōwén Seal form of 識(􀙐) zhì ‘(royal) banner/flag’, shí ‘know (duty)’ (/; ) combines / (yán) ‘direct speech’ (command), and (􂍦) zhī/zhí ‘duty’ (phonosemantic); seeing the command/royal banner, one remembers/knows one's duty to the king/nation; formerly wr. , and later , cf. .
    Note: Today mainly /識 shí ‘know/remember’ (); formerly /識(􀙐) zhì ‘banner/flag’, today wr. /.
Note: In SW 識(􀙐) zhì ‘(royal) banner/flag’ is glossed (􁓿) cháng ‘royal banner/flag’; in SW also read 識(􀙐) shí ‘know (duty)’ ().
Compare: /(􂐅) zhī ‘weave’; /(􂃿) zhí ‘know/remember details (of one's job/duties)’; cf. SW (􀑼) for 識/ variation (XK).
    Compare: (􀹦) zhī/zhì ‘know/knowledge’; (􁲆𢗍) zhì ‘will/intent’.
