(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 识:) The simple-form character 识 (7 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 識 (19 strokes), simplifying the left side 讠/言, and replacing the full-form component 戠 (12 strokes) with 只 (5 strokes).
Note: In the simple form 识, the full-form component 戠 is replaced by 只 zhǐ (phonetic); the simple form is not ⿰讠戠; for use of 只 for 戠, cf. 只.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 識() zhì ‘(royal) banner/flag’, shí ‘know (duty)’ (标志/识; 知) combines 讠/言 (yán) ‘direct speech’ (command), and 戠() zhī/zhí ‘duty’ (phonosemantic); seeing the command/royal banner, one remembers/knows one's duty to the king/nation; formerly wr. 戠, and later 幟, cf. 帜.
Note: Today mainly 识/識 shí ‘know/remember’ (认识); formerly 识/識() zhì ‘banner/flag’, today wr. 帜/幟.
Note: In SW 識() zhì ‘(royal) banner/flag’ is glossed 常() cháng ‘royal banner/flag’; in SW also read 識() shí ‘know (duty)’ (知).
