(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The character is today used as the simplified form of 錄 lù ‘to record’, and as a component in simple-form characters (see below); (8 strokes) is a late variant of the older form (8 strokes); as a component in full-form characters (such as 錄) it is wr. with the older form .
Note: is the simple form, and the full form is 錄; the full-form component is not commonly used among full-form characters (except as a component, see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of /(􁋔𢑗) lù ‘trim/carve wood’ is said to depict a decapitated tree, chopped down and fallen over on its stump, stripped of branches and bark; the top is like 𡕒(􀻜) the bottom of (􀻚) jiàng ‘fall’ (), or like /(􁧻) jì ‘head/snout’ of a butchered/decapitated (􁧿) tuàn ‘pig’, or like (􂠊) jīn ‘axe’ (turned, planted in the tree stump); the bottom shape is as in 𠧳(􁋓) the old form of (􁋑𠅏􁋒𠅡) kè ‘bear/shoulder’, said to depict a carved/finished wooden beam (stripped of branches and bark).
Compare: /(􀯹􀯺𠚬) bō/bāo ‘split/peel’, in which /(􁋔𢑗) lù (phonosemantic); is sometimes seen as an old wr. of .
The full-form character 錄 lù ‘record’ (formerly syn. with 绿/ lǜ ‘golden/greenish-yellow color’) is also wr. (which is the PRC full form; cf. ).
The Shuōwén Seal form of (􂝀錄) lù ‘golden/greenish-yellow color’ combines ‘metal/gold’, and (􁋔𢑗) lù (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 绿/(􂑝) lǜ.
Compare: 𢑛(􁣨), variant of (􁣧􁣦) mèi ‘ghost/demon’, with the severed (􁧻) ‘head/snout’ of a (􁧿) ‘pig’ over its (􁜵) wěi ‘tail’ (abbrev. phonetic).
Older graphs associated with / (HDZ) are linked with , said to depict a lùlu ‘well winch/windlass’ (with bucket, for hoisting water from a well); cf. /, .
Note: Very old use of / as phonetic in / suggests an old initial cluster pr- (Baxter).
Compare: , the usual form of the component in (PRC) simple-form characters (绿, , , …).
    Compare: , the usual form of the component in (ROC) full-form characters (, , 祿, , …; cf. //绿, 錄/).
